The symbiosis between perception and grammar in loanword phonology
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper takes the view that loanword adaptation results from attempts to match the non-native percept of the L2 input, within the confines of the L1 grammar. Neither a purely perceptual nor a purely grammatical account can explain the facts. The L1 grammar includes constraints specific to mimicking foreign inputs. Where not all aspects can be replicated, the grammar prioritizes. In the Cantonese vowel data examined here, tone (the reflex of English stress) and consonants are more carefully replicated than vowel quality, and vowel length is even less important than vowel quality. The paper examines acoustic and psycholinguistic data on L2 vowel perception, and looks closely at the adaptation of English [æ] and [ ] in English loans into Cantonese, which lacks both these vowels. # 2005 Elsevier B.V. Multiple Scansions in Loanword Phonology: Evidence from Cantonese
In loanword phonology we seek to uncover the processes by which speakers possessing one phonological system perceive, apply native representational constraints on, and ultimately produce forms which have been generated by a different phonological system. In other words, loanwords do not come equipped with their own phonological representation. For any phonetic string, it is only native speakers...
متن کاملAn evolutionary account of loanword-induced sound change in Japanese
Generative accounts of loanword phonology typically focus on the role of an individual speaker's grammar and/or perceptual biases in generating the phonological adaptations seen in loanwords. While these types of generative models can be successfully used to explain static synchronic patterns in loanword adaptations in terms of the set of existing constraints in the native phonology, it is more...
متن کاملRussian Loanword Adaptation in Persian; Optimal Approach
In this paper we analyzed some of the phonological rules of Russian loanword adaptation in Persian, on the view of Optimal Theory (OT) (Prince and Smolensky, 1993, 2003). It is the first study of phonological process on Russian loanwords adaptation in Persian. By gathering about 50 current Russian loanwords, we selected some of them to analyze. We found out that vowel insertion, vowel prothesis...
متن کاملLoanword Adaptation and Phonological Theory
This paper examines English-based loanwords in Standard Mandarin in light of various proposals on how loanwords are adapted and processed, and discusses the implications of the findings in loanword adaptation for phonological theory. There have been three major approaches to the adaptation and processing of sound-based loanwords: the Perception Approach, the Phonology Approach, and the Percepti...
متن کاملVariable Vowel Adaptation in Standard Mandarin Loanwords
This study examines which English vowel is matched with which vowel in Standard Mandarin in loanword adaptation, investigates the general patterns for and restrictions on vowel adaptation in Standard Mandarin loanwords, and determines which aspects of vowel quality is more carefully replicated than others. The results show that despite the seemingly high degree of variation, there are systemati...
